Hello EVERYBODY,
So, here it is: another chunk of adventures, another Stranger in a Strange Land Newsletter. There is something special about this particular SIASL: I am going back to Boston tomorrow.
Tomorrow?
Yes, tomorrow.
Wow. Yes, the plane leaves 5:45 pm from Frankfurt and arrives in Boston 7:50 pm (speedy plane: only 2hr. 5 min.). Tomorrow I return from Europe June 11th, 2003 and last year I left for Europe June 12th, 2002. That means I was gone for a year. Some may say that I was home for two months about a half a year ago. I would tell those people this is my newsletter, damnit. I know there is something now worrying many people, but before going further (and I will, at great length), we'll get onto the news:
Internationally, some white men bombed some dark skinned people for their own good, while domestically, an unidentified dark skinned man shot someone. Personally, Eli Gerzon was attacked by a Saint Bernard in the Black Forest.
I've spent the last three weeks in Freiburg hanging with friends, enjoying springtime, being bored, thinking over my future, planning to do a lot of travelling, and doing a little bit of travelling. I planned to go to Italy, Munich, and maybe Switzerland, but in the end I only went to Basel (a city in Switzerland on the Rhein River, full of lovely, thin, steep, cobblestone walkways) and toured the Black Forest, thereby receiving the surprising attack by the aforementioned Saint Bernard (yes, I really did mean it when I said it). But, do not worry: it was small for a Saint Bernard. In short, I really got attacked, but it was only one bite through thick jeans that did not hurt very much, but I was shock for a day and pretty high-strung for a few more. It put a damper on my further travelling plans.
The truth is that's probably good. I need a break. As I said earlier, I've been going for a year now in Europe and it's a very exhausting continent, terribly so. Now, as I said before I know there are many of you who are worried. Many of you are worried that now that I'm going back to Boston the Strange in a Strange Land Newsletter will end; that the clever commentary, adventurous stories, profound searching, and ceaseless tangents and side-comments will no longer visit your mailboxes on irregular intervals, because I will no longer be, in fact, 'a stranger in a strange land.' I tell these people they need not worry because wherever I go I will be a Stranger in a Strange Land and can thereby write the Stranger in a Strange Land Newsletter: 'Gerzon' (is my last name, for those who really don't know me well...) means this very phrase, this very title. Furthermore, 'Eli' means, literally 'the highest' but also it seems to mean 'offering' as in 'an offering to the highest.' In closing, yall seem pretty high all the time so I will continue to occasionally 'offer' this newsletter as a Stranger in a Strange Land regardless of which 'Land' I may physically reside in.
Macht's gut, all the best, you guys are great, I look forward to seeing you American punks in a little while (!) and you European residents: we'll see each other real soon... and everyone write to me and tell me what's new!
may the Beauty create a halo around you,
may the Truth flow through you,
Eli! |
